Bio
The man known as Capt. Jack Harkness is a non-terrestrial human from the future. Jack's true origins are currently unknown, as is his real name. What is known is that long ago he enlisted to fight in a war, somewhere, sometime, and as a result, his best friend whom he also persuaded to join up was tortured and killed, when they were both captured. That he was once a Time Agent (in the 51st century) but is no longer. That his superiors at the Time Agency (correct name? who knows) took away his memories (all? some?) after which he went AWOL and became a con artist with a name stolen from a real man who was am American pilot helping the RAF in WWII.
During a visit to Earth of the time period of his namesake, in a neat little spacecraft, he encounters the Doctor, last of the Time Lords, and his companion Rose Tyler. At first he tries to swindle them with a planted (and he thinks worthless, and harmless) alien artifact for sale. Then he ends up helping them when it later turns out that the worthless alien artifact is responsible for turning innocent humans into malformed puppets of a mad, dead child. He almost loses his life then, but the Doctor saves him and he travels with the Time Lord and Rose.
After several adventures with them, he ends up getting killed by the Daleks who are invading a future Earth. Rose brings him back to life however, and the Doctor and Rose leave him there on Satellite 5.
His next appearance is in Torchwood, apparently quite a good deal of time later, but back on Earth in present day. He's running a tiny group, an incarnation of the once much bigger Torchwood Institue, this one located in Cardiff, Wales on the location of a massive Rift in time and space.
Torchwood episodes reveal various tidbits about Jack but in truth very little is really known about him.
Among those tidbits - Jack can't die. Whatever Rose did when she resurrected him, he simply can not be killed. Episodes of Doctor Who imply that he will go on perhaps to the end of the universe, though possibly experience with that incredible age some changes in form. Another tidbit: he was the first person from the Boeshane Peninsula to join the Time Agency and his good looks earned him a famous nickname which I will forgoe mentioning for anyone who might not want to be spoiled.
